The art and science of CO2 extraction

Imagine this: you take a gas, turn it into liquid form by adding pressure and temperature, and then use it as a solvent to extract compounds from another substance. When the extraction process is complete, simply release the pressure, and the CO2 gas evaporates safely back into the atmosphere. It sounds a lot simpler than it actually is. In reality, CO2 extraction involves a complex process that requires specialized equipment such as closed-loop systems and sophisticated extraction chambers. It also requires fine-tuning of pressure and temperature to achieve the desired results.

The process begins with compressing CO2 gas into a supercritical state, where it has properties of both a liquid and gas. Cannabinoids and terpenes are then extracted from the plant material by passing the supercritical CO2 through it, dissolving and carrying away the desired compounds.

The solution is then passed into a separation chamber where pressure is reduced, allowing the CO2 to return to its gaseous state and leaving behind the concentrated extract. The CO2 is recycled back into the system for future use, making it a cost-effective and sustainable method of extraction.
