#63: Cutting-Edge Cuisine: The West Blvd Cannabis Story

Deep in the heart of Vancouver's Mt. Pleasant neighbourhood, a unique venture is pushing cannabis culture forward. Welcome to West Blvd Cannabis (WBC), the first culinary cannabis facility in Canada and the first licensed microprocessor approved by the City of Vancouver. Born and built from deep West Coast roots, WBC is more than just a company - it's a revolution, redefining what cannabis microprocessors can achieve in a heavily regulated industry.

Unlike other microprocessors, WBC does not cultivate or process any cannabis on-site. Instead, it serves as a hub for product research and development. With a state-of-the-art test kitchen at their disposal, they formulate their own line of consumer-packaged goods, while also inviting other companies to use their space for product innovation.

WBC houses an array of brands under its umbrella, including Choklit Park, Gladstone, and the culinary-focused Farm and Florist. Each brand encapsulates WBC's mission to build high-quality, innovative brands that resonate with the connoisseurs, epicureans, and pioneers. The Farm and Florist brand, in particular, showcases WBC's commitment to culinary innovation, with products ranging from cannabis-infused olive oil to maple syrup.

At the helm of this groundbreaking enterprise are four friends turned successful entrepreneurs - Connor McNamee, Nico Sto Tomas, Brad Quevillon, and Cayli Weinberg. Their combined expertise in culinary ventures, marketing management, business operations, and branding has created a unique blend of West Coast cannabis culture and cutting-edge product innovation.

In this feature, we'll explore how WBC and Farm and Florist are changing the game with their culinary expertise, their commitment to quality and safety, and their drive to elevate the cannabis industry to new heights. This is a story of inspiration, innovation, and the exceptional journey of four friends who dared to dream big. So get ready to experience the power of culinary cannabis at its finest - welcome to West Blvd Cannabis.

From concept to cuisine: The birth of West Blvd Cannabis

West Blvd Cannabis' journey began with a simple yet powerful idea - to bring together the best of culinary expertise and cannabis culture. The goal was to create a one-of-a-kind experience for cannabis enthusiasts, with a focus on high-quality products and innovative flavours.

"Three of the four founders had previously launched Vancouver's first municipally licensed store, expanding into a multi-province operation," says McNamee. "During this period, our interest shifted towards culinary cannabis, as consumers kept signalling a demand. It ultimately surpassed our focus on retail. "

As demand for a wider range of products surged, the founders realized the need for a more comprehensive infrastructure. Inspired by the area where they lived, worked, and collaborated, they established a parent company, West Blvd Cannabis, with the aim of creating a unique space for cannabis product innovation.

"We recognized the evolving landscape of the cannabis industry and saw an opportunity to introduce new methods and ideas," McNamee explains. "This innovative spirit is at the core of West Blvd Cannabis's foundation."

And with that, West Blvd Cannabis was born - a culmination of diverse backgrounds, expertise, and a shared passion for innovating in the cannabis industry. Together, these four friends embarked on a journey to push the boundaries of what was possible, and today, they stand at the forefront of culinary cannabis in Canada.

Navigating challenges: The key to resilience and growth

Operating as the first culinary cannabis facility in Canada was not without its challenges, as McNamee explains. "We navigated the complexities of zoning for a use category that was still undefined by Health Canada," he says. These obstacles did not deter WBC's founders, who were no strangers to overcoming hurdles and taking bold risks.

Ultimately, the team's unwavering determination and commitment to their vision paid off, resulting in WBC becoming the first licensed microprocessor approved by the City of Vancouver. This precedent-setting achievement further solidified WBC's role as pioneers in the industry.

WBC's state-of-the-art test kitchen is the heart of their operations, where they develop and perfect new cannabis-infused products. And with Palatability Test License approval from Health Canada, WBC can conduct sensory tests and gather feedback from consumers to ensure their products meet the highest standards of quality and flavour.

The location of WBC's facility also plays a crucial role in their success. Situated in the heart of Vancouver's Mt. Pleasant neighbourhood, a bustling hub of culinary creativity, WBC is surrounded by like-minded individuals and businesses, creating a supportive ecosystem for their operations.

"This neighbourhood, decorated with gastropubs, independent fashion boutiques along Main, and a concentration of restaurants in Cambie Village, bleeds a lively and eclectic atmosphere," says McNamee. "The area's mix of edgy galleries, breweries, and distilleries reflects the avant-garde nature of our company."

When you combine this vibrant community with WBC's cutting-edge facility and passionate team, what you get is an exceptional environment that pushes the boundaries of culinary cannabis. This is what sets West Blvd Cannabis apart from other cannabis microprocessors - a unique combination of culinary expertise, business acumen, and a vibrant community that fuels innovation and success.

Taste the difference: Culinary cannabis at its finest

At the center of West Blvd Cannabis' (WBC) innovation is its range of high-quality, consumer-packaged goods under various brands such as Choklit Park, Gladstone, and the Farm and Florist. Together, these brands encapsulate WBC's commitment to continuous innovation and elevating the cannabis experience.

Choklit Park offers a range of premium craft cannabis flower and pre-rolls, while Gladstone focuses on affordable, sungrown cannabis products. But it's the Farm and Florist brand that truly sets WBC apart from the rest.

"Our range of products includes, but is not limited to, culinary oils, syrups, and hot sauces," says McNamee. "These ingredients are designed by chefs and are backed by a curated importer to ensure our consumers have a quality that they are used to having access to."

The result? A range of unique and delicious culinary cannabis products that cater to a variety of tastes and preferences. These carefully crafted products have been a hit with consumers, creating a loyal following and demand for more innovative offerings.

These products, which include cannabis-infused olive oil, soy sauce, and maple syrup, showcase WBC's commitment to culinary innovation. The result is a range of products that are not only delicious but versatile and easy to incorporate into everyday cooking.

Farm and Florist's Garlic Chili and Maple Syrup have been particularly popular, with consumers finding creative ways to use them in their cooking. These items stand out for their versatility and appeal to a wide range of palates. From drizzling over roasted vegetables to topping off pancakes, the possibilities are limited only by one's imagination.

"We want to support the diversity of food," says McNamee. "Each ingredient aligns with different cultures, palates, and cooking methods." And this is how WBC is setting the standard for culinary cannabis - by creating products that cater to diverse tastes, preferences, and cooking styles.

Beyond today: A vision for the future

As West Blvd Cannabis (WBC) looks to the future, there is much to be excited about. While a bit coy about specific plans, McNamee hinted at possible expansion and new products on the horizon.

"Our dedication to culinary cannabis suggests that we're likely to continue developing paths with like-minded businesses and culinary experts to expand our reach and influence in the cannabis industry."

No stranger to collaboration, WBC has already partnered with other innovative companies in the cannabis and culinary space. "We partnered with a prominent caterer in Vancouver, allowing retailers to guide canna-curious consumers to our products and services," he says.

"For now, make sure to scan our Catering QR code so you're able to create your own culinary collaboration at home or a private residence. You'll have to stay tuned and follow our progress as we announce new partnerships."

In the midst of this exciting evolution, we can be sure of one thing - West Blvd Cannabis will continue to carve its path as a leader in culinary cannabis innovation. This culinary journey is far from over, and WBC will undoubtedly continue to push the boundaries of what's possible with cannabis-infused products.

Onward and upward: The next chapter for WBC

When one thinks of cannabis, culinary creativity may not be the first thing that comes to mind. But thanks to companies like West Blvd Cannabis, this perception is changing. Through their dedication to culinary excellence and innovation, WBC has redefined what cannabis-infused products can be - delicious, versatile, and accessible. And with an eye toward the future and a passion for collaboration, there is no limit to what this pioneering company can achieve. The journey of West Blvd Cannabis is far from over, and we can't wait to see what they cook up next.
