#99: CO2 Extracts: A Game-Changer for Cannabis Concentrates

What happens when you combine one atom of carbon and two atoms of oxygen? You get carbon dioxide (CO2), a naturally occurring gas that has been used in various industries for centuries. You can make dry ice, carbonated drinks, and even use it in fire extinguishers.

But it wasn't until the late 20th century that CO2 would be recognized for its potential in extracting cannabis compounds. Before this, traditional methods of extraction involved more techniques such as pressing, soaking, and heating to produce concentrates. Think hash, tinctures, and edibles.

When CO2 extracts first emerged in the cannabis industry, it was seen as a game-changer. Not only did it produce high-quality extracts with minimal impurities, but it also allowed for more control over the final product. This method of extraction quickly gained popularity and is now widely used in the cannabis industry.

So what makes CO2 extraction so special? And why are CO2 extracts considered superior by many in the cannabis community? Let's take a closer look at the process, its benefits, and how it compares to other extraction methods.

The discovery that paved the way for CO2 extracts

Jan Baptist van Helmont

First identified as a distinct gas in the 1640s by Flemish chemist Jan Baptist van Helmont, CO2 was a curious substance that was often overlooked. During the Industrial Revolution, scientists understood its role in the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels and its ability to absorb and reflect infrared radiation.

It wasn't until 1822 when Charles Cagniard de la Tour, a French physicist, discovered the critical point of CO2. This is the temperature and pressure at which a substance can exist in both liquid and gas states simultaneously.

In 1879, Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE) was introduced, which utilized this critical point to extract different compounds from natural substances using CO2. Carbonated beverages and decaffeinated coffee were some of the first products to use this method.

However, it wasn't until the late 1970s and early 1980s when this technology was used for the extraction of plant materials. CO2 extraction became a viable option for producing high-quality cannabis extracts in the late 1990s. And the rest, as they say, is history.

The art and science of CO2 extraction

Imagine this: you take a gas, turn it into liquid form by adding pressure and temperature, and then use it as a solvent to extract compounds from another substance. When the extraction process is complete, simply release the pressure, and the CO2 gas evaporates safely back into the atmosphere. This is what SFE allowed for, making it an environmentally friendly and highly efficient extraction method.

It sounds a lot simpler than it actually is. In reality, CO2 extraction involves a complex process that requires specialized equipment such as closed-loop systems and sophisticated extraction chambers. It also requires fine-tuning of pressure and temperature to achieve the desired results.

The process begins with compressing CO2 gas into a supercritical state, where it has properties of both a liquid and gas. Cannabinoids and terpenes are then extracted from the plant material by passing the supercritical CO2 through it, dissolving and carrying away the desired compounds.

The solution is then passed into a separation chamber where pressure is reduced, allowing the CO2 to return to its gaseous state and leaving behind the concentrated extract. The CO2 is recycled back into the system for future use, making it a cost-effective and sustainable method of extraction.

Why CO2 extracts stand out

One of the biggest advantages of CO2 extraction is its ability to produce high-quality extracts. By controlling the pressure and temperature, specific compounds can be targeted for extraction while leaving behind unwanted impurities. Here are some other benefits of CO2-extracted oils:

Potent: Reaching THC levels of up to 90%, CO2 oil is potent and can hold its own against other concentrates on the market when it comes to strength.

Full-melt: like dabs? If you do, then CO2 oil is for you! It has the ability to vaporize completely without leaving any residue, making it a popular choice for dabbing.

Full spectrum: CO2 extraction preserves the cannabinoids and terpenes, resulting in a full-spectrum extract that closely resembles the natural compounds found in the plant.

Clean and pure: Unlike methods that use solvents like butane or ethanol, CO2 extraction produces a clean and pure extract without any residual solvents. It is non-toxic and safe for consumption.

Versatile: Found in a variety of forms such as vape cartridges, honey oils, edibles, and topicals, CO2 are as versatile as a Swiss Army knife.

Environmentally friendly: Sustainable and eco-friendly, CO2 extraction is biodegradable, energy-efficient, and does not produce harmful by-products or emissions.

CO2 products for every preference

As the popularity of CO2 extraction continues to rise, so does the variety and availability of products. At Herbal Dispatch, we offer a range of CO2 oil products that cater to different preferences and needs. Here's what we recommend:

With the versatility and variety of products offered, CO2 extraction is definitely a game-changer in the cannabis industry. Whether you prefer vaping, dabbing, or edibles, there is a CO2 oil product that will suit your needs and preferences.

A new era in cannabis production

When first discovered, CO2 extraction was seen as a revolutionary method for producing high-quality cannabis oil. Today, it has proven to be so much more than that. With its many benefits and versatility, CO2 oils have become a staple in the cannabis industry and are here to stay. Whether you're a medical patient or a recreational user, there is no denying the popularity and effectiveness of CO2 extraction. If you haven't tried it yet, give it a go and find out why so many people are raving about it. Trust us, you won't be disappointed.
