It’s always easy to tell when someone has a passion for what they do, and when that passion is combined with a dedication to achieve greatness, remarkable results are the endgame.
Case-in-point we have the good people at Blue River Extracts. These scientific minds have committed themselves to creating a series of cannabis-extracted products that are so pure and potent, even the harshest critic is too high to be able to say anything negative.
Herbal Dispatch wanted to know more about Blue River and their products, so we sat down with Marcus AKA Bubbleman who is their Canadian distributor. Marcus also has a history of inventing groundbreaking cannabis goodies that have spurred the development of marijuana forward.
Before we get to Blue River and its products, I need to ask you about Bubble Bags considering you are the inventor. What exactly are they?
Bubble Bags are a water-extraction technology. You put the bags inside a bucket, you fill the bucket with water and ice and you put the herb in. The ice freezes the gland heads on the herb, which contain the medicine. You mix [and] the ice smashes back and forth. It hits these little heads, which are brittle because they are wax membranes that are encapsulating the oils and what happens is they break free.
Due to their density, they sink in water while everything else floats, so it allows people to create an almost pharmaceutical-grade medicine.
What it really is, is it’s 99.9 percent glandular trichome heads and that is where 100 percent of the medicine is located.
How did you think of such an out-of-the-box method of extraction?
There was another bag company that existed. It was only two bags, it was a simpler function, but it was the concept that got my mind thinking, and then it was just a matter of doing the research and playing around with different screens.
You also have a popular online show that has developed quite a following. Can you tell me about it?
It’s called Hash Church. I invite experts in the industry and we have discussions about all sorts of things.
Was this the show that made you known for terpenes?
Episode 25 we started talking about rosin, pressure and heat. We thought, wouldn’t it be cool if a machine existed that could have plates and you can heat them up. Those machines all exist now because of our conversations.
Great people from all over the world come on the show and we have discussions, and terpenes was one of the discussions we started having on my show. This guy “K” from Trichome Technologies [said] you’ve got to get on the terpene conversation.
My friend Skunkman Sam, back in 2002, he already was the one that had acquired pure cannabinoids and pure terpenes. He figured out that if you add the terpenes to the cannabinoids it greatly modulates the effects.
Do you come from a science background?
I wouldn’t say I come from a science background. I acknowledge science and understand it very well. I just studied and learned the thing that I loved.
You have a passion for cannabis, obviously. How did you first get into it?
I’ve been involved with it for 25 years. I first got into it by smoking joints in my garage behind my house and I was like, this is awesome. Then when I was 18, my dad said if you are going to do this, do it right so [my partners and I] started becoming hemp activists.
[My partners] ended up selling their company for $133 million, it was called Manitoba Harvest.
Then in 1996 I moved out [to BC] and my friend Hilary Black started the BC Compassion Club. I became their first grower, I supported them from day one.
Specifically on the topic of Blue River Extracts, can you tell me what the company produces and sells?
Blue River Extracts is a company that creates terpene profiles. Meaning, they don’t extract pure terpenes, they extract the profile of the terpene that the cannabis plant provides.
Cannabis can provide [for example], 50+ terpenes or even 100+ terpenes in one single batch of cannabis. My partner figured out a very unique [confidential] way to extract these terpenes off of the plant. They key is that terpenes are volatile, they evaporate at room temperature and that’s why you can smell it when someone has a bag of weed in their pocket.
Any type of heat will cause degradation and will alter the form of the terpenes. So a lot of people who do terpene extraction, do it with hydro-diffusion or steam diffusion. Steam is hot, so a lot of people are like, how do you get clear terpenes? Well, [clear] is how they look, only if you heat them up they go yellow.
A lot of companies sell these yellow terpenes. We’ve basically got the word on the street that we’re the highest quality.
Blue River Terpenes have been used to create unique products and power brands throughout the industry. Our dedication to continuing to improve our technology influences the quality of products, patients, and separates our brand from others. Thank you for all who have supported us over the years, and allowed us to expand our mission. We will be making updates on our website and our retail business model so please stay tuned online at www.blueriverextracts.com @golddropco @rollinghills___ @bubblemanbrand @originalbreedersleague @ucanncorp #blueriverterps #blueriverterpenes #bluedrop
How many different products does Blue River currently have?
We probably have, like, 25 different cultivars of terpenes. We also do terpene-infused sugars for sweetening drinks.
Are your products mainly for vaporizing or edible consumption?
People buy them from us to mix with their products.
What people have learned from our conversations is that if you have a certain something, some oil [for example], you’re smoking it but it’s not really giving you what you want. So, you may be able to go out and look at different profiles. You know when people say it’s a sativa or an indica? The main difference is the terpenes, that’s what does that.
[For example] some people get anxiety on sativas, that’s because it’s got terpinolene and other terpenes that really create that intense energy.
Cannabinoids are not too different. It’s the terpenes that are creating all the different effects that people get from cannabis, whether it’s stimulating their appetite, or reducing their ocular pressure, or inducing sleep from insomnia, these things really seem to be controlled via the modulation of the terpenes.
What is your all-time favourite strain to extract?
That’s a tough one. I prefer cultivars like Super Silver Haze, Where’s My Bike, Amnesia, and Congolese. I prefer exotic cultivars that produce exotic terpene profiles.
Blue River Extracts are available on Herbal Dispatch and come highly recommended.
